Max Capocaccia is an architect with over 20 years of experience, contributing to projects at various scales in Italy, Ghana, Togo, and New Zealand. His expertise spans residential architecture, stadiums, government and civic buildings, commercial developments, and master planning.
Over the past decade, Max has primarily focused on complex high-end residential projects and the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, overseeing projects from concept to construction management across New Zealand. His practice, MCAS, specializes in designing airtight homes, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and utilizing low-toxicity materials. MCAS excels in creating sustainable spaces without compromising aesthetics or functionality. Whether integrating passive solar design principles, incorporating renewable energy systems, or employing innovative building techniques, the firm prioritizes projects that minimize environmental impact while maximizing efficiency and comfort. MCAS also emphasizes self-sufficiency and resilience, particularly in disaster-ready dwellings, pushing the boundaries of sustainable living.
Max has always believed that architecture should serve communities. His master’s thesis focused on a social housing project in Kerala, India, and he has contributed to socially responsive initiatives through Architects Without Borders Italy. Following the devastating Christchurch earthquake, he led a community group in developing the master plan for the suburb of Sumner, Christchurch. This initiative resulted in a collaboration with the local Territorial Authority as part of the Council's Facilities Rebuild Programme and the Sumner Community-Led Village Centre Masterplan.
Max is also involved in architectural education, working as a part-time tutor in tertiary education. His role allows him to mentor the next generation of architects, guiding students in developing strong design principles, technical skills, and critical thinking. Through teaching, he fosters a deeper understanding of sustainable architecture and innovative problem-solving, reinforcing his commitment to shaping not only the built environment but also the future of the profession.
Max is deeply committed to architecture’s role in shaping resilient, functional, and inspiring spaces. His work spans from individual homes to large-scale urban projects, always prioritizing thoughtful design, sustainability, and community impact. Whether working on high-end residences, adaptive reuse, or urban master planning, he strives to create architecture that balances aesthetics, performance, and environmental responsibility
